Electronic Know-Your-Customer – Digital identity verification that confirms a user's real identity (typically against a government ID) without an in-person branch visit, required in Japan and elsewhere to open a bank account, access higher transaction limits, or unlock regulated financial products. For a payments app expanding into banking and lending, the size of its eKYC-verified user base is a leading indicator of how many of its users it can actually cross-sell regulated financial services to — a far more meaningful gate than total registered users, most of whom may never clear identity verification.
