SOFI A Sixth Straight Profitable Quarter, Clean of Any One-Time Item

SoFi's first quarter of 2025 posted $71.1 million of GAAP net income - a sixth consecutive profitable quarter, and unlike three of the prior five, this one carried no material one-time gain. Financial Services' contribution profit nearly quadrupled year over year to $148.3 million. Total net revenue reached $771.8 million (+20% YoY); the stock gave back a third of its Q4 2024 rally, closing at $11.63, while SoFi Technologies' capital ratio ticked down to 15.5%.

The Cleanest Profitable Quarter Yet

This is SoFi's first-quarter 2025 report, covering the three months ended March 31, 2025. Total net revenue was $771.8 million, up 20% year over year from $645.0 million in Q1 2024, and up from Q4 2024's $734.1 million. GAAP net income was $71.1 million, a sixth consecutive profitable quarter, down from Q1 2024's $88.0 million - but that comparison actually understates this quarter's quality: Q1 2024's number included a $59.2 million one-time debt-extinguishment gain, while this quarter's $71.1 million carries no comparable one-time item - the cleanest read on core operating profitability this site has recorded since the sequence of profitable quarters began. Adjusted EBITDA reached a new record of $210.3 million, up from Q4's $198.0 million.

Financial Services kept compounding: contribution profit reached $148.3 million, up 299% year over year from Q1 2024's $37.2 million - nearly quadrupling in a single year, and now within striking distance of Lending's $238.9 million as the company's largest profit contributor. Total members reached over 10.9 million; total deposits reached $27.26 billion, up from Q4's $25.98 billion.

The Prescription

SoFi should use this quarter's clean profitability - no debt gain, no tax release, no goodwill charge - as the actual baseline for what "SoFi's normal quarter" now looks like, and communicate it that way explicitly. After five quarters where at least one of the last six carried a material one-time item, this is the first quarter this site can point to as an unadjusted read on run-rate earnings power, and that fact deserves more emphasis than a routine "beat expectations" framing.

What SoFi should stop doing is letting Financial Services' trajectory toward overtaking Lending as the largest segment go unaddressed strategically. At $148.3 million versus Lending's $238.9 million, the gap has closed from roughly 5.5x a year ago to about 1.6x today - if that pace continues, Financial Services could be the company's single largest profit center within a few more quarters, and management should be laying out what that means for capital allocation and product investment priorities now, not waiting until it happens to react.

Segments: The Gap to Lending Keeps Closing

SoFi reports three segments: Lending, Technology Platform, and Financial Services.

Segment Net Revenue (Q1 2025) Contribution Profit (Q1 2025) Net Revenue (Q1 2024) Contribution Profit (Q1 2024)
Lending $413,373 $238,935 $330,476 $207,719
Technology Platform $103,427 $30,913 $94,366 $30,742
Financial Services $303,119 $148,332 $150,551 $37,174

Lending's contribution profit grew 15% on 25% revenue growth - a real margin compression this quarter (contribution margin fell to roughly 58% from 63%), the first such move this site has flagged in Lending specifically, worth watching against Technology Platform's Q3 2024 wobble as a pattern of segments taking turns showing softness. Technology Platform's contribution profit was essentially flat (up 1%) on 10% revenue growth - a second quarter of underwhelming conversion after Q3 2024's wobble, now looking less like a one-off and more like a genuine deceleration in this segment specifically. Financial Services again leads: contribution profit of $148.3 million, up 299% year over year - the fourth consecutive quarter of sequential growth in this segment's profit contribution.

Stock Price: Giving Back a Third of the Q4 2024 Rally

SOFI closed the quarter (March 31, 2025) at $11.63 per share, down 24% from Q4 2024's $15.40 close - giving back roughly a third of the near-doubling this site flagged as running ahead of fundamentals last quarter. The decline was gradual across the quarter (January $15.78, February $14.47, March $11.63), consistent with a broader early-2025 growth-stock pullback more than anything specific in SoFi's own results, especially given this quarter's clean profitability and record Adjusted EBITDA. SOFI remains 54% below the $25.14 January 2021 high, a wider discount than Q4's 39% gap but still narrower than every quarter this site tracked before Q4 2024.

Beyond the Usual

SoFi Technologies' Total Risk-Based Capital Ratio Ticked Down for the First Time in This Site's Coverage

SoFi Technologies' total risk-based capital ratio fell to 15.5% this quarter from 16.2% at the end of Q4 2024; SoFi Bank's own ratio fell to 16.6% from 17.5%. Both remain comfortably above regulatory minimums, and the filing frames this as loan growth (record originations, per the MD&A) outpacing capital growth in the normal course of business - not a stress signal. This is nonetheless the first quarter this site has specifically tracked a capital-ratio decline for SoFi, and it's worth watching as a recurring line item in future posts given how directly it constrains the pace of further loan-book growth.

Lending's Margin Compressed for the First Time This Site Has Flagged in That Segment Specifically

Lending's contribution margin fell to roughly 58% this quarter from around 63% a year earlier, even as both revenue (+25%) and contribution profit (+15%) grew. Prior quarters showed margin wobbles in Technology Platform (Q3 2024) but Lending itself had held a steady ~58-62% margin through every prior post in this coverage - this is the first time the company's largest and most consistent segment has shown genuine margin pressure, worth tracking alongside the capital-ratio move above since both point toward the same underlying dynamic (faster loan growth pressuring both capital and unit economics simultaneously).

Target Valuation Range

The Q1 2025 pullback has brought the stock back closer to base-case fair value (~$40-43 billion enterprise value) after Q4 2024's tax-release-inflated rally pushed it into the bull-case range - this quarter's clean profitability now sits on a more reasonably priced multiple than three months ago.

With 1,105,363,096 shares outstanding as of April 30, 2025 (the closest disclosed count to this filing) and a March 31, 2025 close of $11.63, implied market capitalization was roughly $12.86 billion, down from approximately $16.89 billion at the end of Q4 2024.

Metric Value (USD thousands)

EV/Revenue» ~13.4x ~13.7x ~16.5x ~14.9x
Scenario Key assumption Implied enterprise value
Bear Lending's margin pressure and the capital-ratio decline both continue, forcing a growth slowdown; multiple compresses to ~11-12x TTM revenue ~$31-34 billion
Base Growth continues at roughly this quarter's clean pace (20% revenue, mid-double-digit Adjusted EBITDA growth); multiple holds near the current ~14.9x TTM revenue ~$40-43 billion
Bull Financial Services overtakes Lending as the largest segment sooner than expected, capital ratios stabilize; multiple re-rates toward ~18x ~$50-53 billion
Current (period-end close) March 31, 2025 actual ~$41,840,448

The multiple compressed from Q4's tax-release-inflated ~16.5x back to a more sustainable ~14.9x, landing the stock almost exactly on the base case - a more comfortable place to be priced than Q4's bull-case-adjacent level flagged last quarter. The two new findings above (capital ratio, Lending margin) are the specific risks that would push this toward the bear case if they continue for another quarter or two.
